About the Movie

Discover the Story

The script follows Lofty Jones, a hard-drinking Irish immigrant in New York, drifting between pubs, friends, and fleeting schemes. Alongside his crew—Hobbes, the hustler Slee, the aging Fish, and the larger-than-life Tom Lyons—Lofty navigates a chaotic world of pub culture, scams, funerals, and Gaelic football. Key threads include: • Lofty’s aimlessness: He struggles with alcoholism, fleeting jobs, and feelings of failure, though he clings to humor and bravado. • Aoife, the striking bartender, becomes his love interest. Facing deportation, she agrees to marry Lofty in a pragmatic arrangement, but their relationship teeters between genuine affection and bitterness. • Tom Lyons, the elder statesman of the group, is both admired and flawed—charismatic, unfaithful, and ultimately facing illness. His decline casts a shadow over the crew. • Schemes & scams: Slee and Lofty dabble in illicit cider distribution and other hustles, which spiral into run-ins with police and betrayals. • Community & decay: Pubs, funerals, and football matches form the backdrop, showing both the endurance and erosion of Irish immigrant identity in America. • Clashes & heartbreak: Lofty discovers Aoife’s affair with Tom, explodes in jealousy, but still circles back to her. • Endings: Tom dies, memorialized with both reverence and humor. Aoife and Lofty, bruised but bonded, stand together at the close, uncertain but defiant. The tone swings between raucous comedy, raw pub banter, tragic decline, and bittersweet romance, capturing the messy, fragile pride of an immigrant community holding onto dignity amid chaos.
